Jose Mourinho's time at Manchester United is over.

After a disastrous third season at Old Trafford, Ed Woodward and the board decided to act following United's 3-1 defeat away at Liverpool on Sunday.

It was perhaps the worst performance under Mourinho, with United severely lacking in every department across the pitch.

How Liverpool only scored three times from 36 shots and United had the score level until the 73rd minute is quite astonishing.

Mourinho leaves the club having won two trophies in his debut season and guiding the Red Devils to second in the table last summer.

However, the decline this season has simply been too much for a club of United's stature to handle.

But Rangers manager Steven Gerrard was quick to speak about Mourinho's positives during his short reign.

The Liverpool legend said, per Goal: "He's a winner isn't he, how can I sit here and say anything bad about Jose Mourinho?

"He's a serial winner everywhere he has gone. He's been sacked at United but he's won them a couple of trophies. He's done the best job since Alex Ferguson left.

"It seems like they sort of struggled but Jose came in and put a couple of trophies in the cabinet, so I don't think you can criticise him too much.

"It will be interesting to see which direction they go with the new manager, but none of the Man Utd fans care what I say about it!"

He has a point, but the lack of attacking football under Mourinho's rule and now a lack of results meant his dismissal felt inevitable.

But given the failings of David Moyes and Louis van Gaal, Gerrard is probably correct in saying that Mourinho is the best United manger since Ferguson.

Now, United begin their search for their fourth permanent manager in the five years since Ferguson's departure.
