Liverpool’s 3-1 victory over Manchester United on Sunday has just got even sweeter for the Merseysiders.

As if going 19 points clear of their rivals wasn’t enough, Liverpool fans discovered that victory was the final nail in the coffin for Jose Mourinho as he was sacked on Tuesday morning.

Whether Mourinho would have stayed in his role if his side had held on to the 1-1 scoreline is unknown.

But Xherdan Shaqiri made sure there was simply no coming back for Mourinho.

The Swiss international came off the bench with the scores level in the 70th-minute.

Ten minutes later, he had scored two deflected goals and Liverpool were 3-1 up.

What an impact.

Scoring twice to beat United is enough to make you a hero among the Liverpool fans.

But it seems he’s also a bit of a hero amongst his teammates now.

‘Inside Anfield’ has captured the scenes inside the tunnel after the match and it shows how captain for the day - Virgil van Dijk - reacted to Shaqiri’s heroics.

The defender can be heard shouting “Big Shaq in the building” as the players entered the dressing rooms after the game.

Class.

Shaqiri has made a fantastic start to his Liverpool career after his £13.5 million move from relegated Stoke City.

Despite playing a bit-part role, the 27-year-old has chipped in with five goals and three assists in his 17 matches so far.

Oh, and he single-handedly made sure Mourinho was dismissed as United manager.

As Van Dijk said, "Big Shaq" is very much in the building.
