To the delight of the majority of Manchester United fans, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been appointed as caretaker boss until the end of the season on a 5-month loan deal from Molde.

The Norwegian is very much a cult-hero for the club after spending 11 years as a player at Old Trafford, bagging 126 goals in 366 games.

Most notably, Solskjaer will be remembered for his last-minute strike in the 1999 UEFA Champions League final against Bayern Munich, causing ITV commentator Clive Tyldesley to utter the now-famous words: "And Solskjaer has won it!".

The 45-year-old's first match at the helm is against old club Cardiff City, where Solskjaer was in charge for eight months.

United fans will however be glossing over that reign pretty quickly as the Norwegian was relegated from the Premier League with the Welsh side and sacked shortly into the following season.

On a more positive note, there is one moment that United fans may have forgotten during Solskjaer's time at the club and that was his willingness and - many would say - bravery to stand up to then-boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

It was back in 2000 when United's four first-team strikers were Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke, Teddy Sheringham and Solskjaer.

Rumours were brewing that Ruud Van Nistelrooy was going to be a signed by the club, therefore tension naturally grew between the current front men.

"I never had a run-in with Sir Alex but once he got all four strikers together," Solskjaer told MUTV in an interview aired earlier this year.

"He said me and Coley [Andy Cole] had played in the game against Southampton and we were playing Chelsea on the Monday.

"He said, 'All four strikers have played a lot and I want to start Teddy and Yorkie, is everyone okay with that?'

"The other three nodded, so I let them go out of the office and I said: 'No, I can’t have that.' This was because, earlier, he’d challenged me that he was going to sign Ruud and wanted to know could I play many games on the bounce?

"I said, 'Here's your chance.'

"I scored and did well and - after one day's recovery - you can see me play two games in three days. He said: 'Okay, son. You’re right.' "

For Ferguson to admit he was wrong was a rarity to say the least.

But the striker Solskjaer was worried about ended up being his main striker partner at United, as the club signed Van Nistelrooy the following year and they scored a combined 61 goals in the Dutchman's first season.
