One of the darkest days in recent memory for the WWE saw Roman Reigns have to step away from the squared circle to go and battle leukaemia.

For the second time in his life, the Big Dog has been struck down with the form of cancer and is currently undergoing treatment.

Reigns had only really just won the Universal title after a long pursuit of former champion Brock Lesnar, now the man holding the strap once more.

Since Reigns has been away from Raw, the Red Brand has hit historic lows for ratings twice and Vince McMahon has been forced to come back to television to stop the bleeding.

With no timetable on Reigns' return to action - if ever - the WWE have started grooming other contenders to Lesnar's crown.

Braun Strowman will face the Beast Incarnate at the Royal Rumble for the Universal title, but it's almost certain Lesnar will be holding onto his prized possession until WrestleMania 35.

Drew McIntyre is in the midst of a monster push himself and many believe he will be a world champion sometime in 2019. However, reports suggest Seth Rollins will be the man to challenge Lesnar in New Jersey.

Although Rollins would never have wished to inherit Reigns' spot like this, he is arguably the best wrestler in the WWE right now and deserving of returning to the world title picture.

In an interview with Iridian Fierro of La Ley 107.9, Rollins talked about how he's been keeping in touch with Roman every step of the way.

"I stay in touch with Roman. I talk to him once a week just to see how he’s doing. Mostly it’s about that. At the end of the day he doesn’t want to worry about work, he doesn’t want to deal with that headache right now, so it’s about seeing how he’s doing and his recovery right now.

"It’s nice to hear from him, and once in a while he’ll have a question about how things are going [with RAW], but it’s mostly just two friends catching up together."

In storyline, of course, Dean Ambrose claimed that his Shield brothers never checked up on him while he was recovering from his bicep surgery.

Kayfabe or not, The Shield is forever.
