Third season syndrome has struck once again for Jose Mourinho at Manchester United.

His first two campaigns at Old Trafford were decent enough.

A sixth-place finish in the Premier League was disappointing but League Cup and Europa League wins turned the season into a satisfactory one.

Last season, Mourinho’s side finished trophyless but did come runners-up to an irresistible Manchester City side.

But this season has been nothing short of a disaster for Mourinho and United.

The football being played is turgid as they find themselves 19 points off league leaders Liverpool, with a 0 goal difference from 17 matches.

It hasn’t quite gone as expected after Mourinho was appointed back in the summer of 2016.

There may be a few United fans who claim, after hindsight, that Mourinho was never right for the club.

But it’s clear the majority were delighted after the ‘Special One’ was announced as the club’s new boss.

That can be seen on the club’s Reddit page when Mourinho was announced.

Scrolling through the hundreds of comments, you get the sense that they believed Mourinho would emulate Sir Alex Ferguson’s success at the club.

Just take a look at some of the comments on the day Mourinho was appointed:

COMMENTS FROM FANS WHEN MOURINHO ARRIVED

“This is the s*** I want to see. Time to get back to business.

“I’m so sick of possession football. I want two crushing CDMS, pace on the wings, sitting deep and absorbing pressure and then breaking with quick passing and forward runs.

“I want to see us demolish s***ty teams at Old Trafford one week and then go to Arsenal and crush their spirit with cheap goals, dirty fouls, time wasting, mind games, f***ing everything. Leave with 3 points and a fine from the FA.”

It’s fair to say that one fan didn’t get what they wanted.

Another added: “Was excited for Jose to come to United, but now that's it's official, I'm f***ing buzzing for next season.”

“Get hype! So excited to see what he can do!” a third fan wrote.

“The Devil finally in his own playground. This was written in the stars, ladies and gentlemen,” was another comment.

Finally, user czervick212 posted: “HOLY F*** WE ACTUALLY PULLED IT OFF WE'RE NOT A LAUGHING STOCK ANYMORE!!!!”

The sorry truth is that Mourinho turned United into even more of a laughing stock than they were under Louis van Goal.
