Atletico Madrid have moved to quash reports that defender Lucas Hernandez is set to move to Bayern Munich in January.
Spanish newspaper Marca reported on Wednesday that Bayern had agreed to pay the France international’s 80million euro release clause to push through a deal in the New Year.
But, in an unusual statement, Atletico insisted no such deal was in the offing and Lucas was committed to the La Liga club.
“Following the story published by the Marca newspaper on an alleged deal between Bayern Munich and our player Lucas Hernandez, according to which the German club is to trigger the Frenchman’s buyout clause in the January window, Atletico de Madrid wishes to state that, in conversation with our club, Lucas Hernandez has denied any deal with Bayern Munich and also any intention to exit our club,” the statement said.
“Additionally, the excellent relationship between Atletico de Madrid and the German club has led Bayern Munich to deny said operation during an conversation between officials of both clubs.”
Lucas, 22, came through the ranks at Atletico was part of France’s World Cup winning squad in the summer.
He's been a crucial figure for Diego Simeone's side, as well as Didier Deschamps' in the summer, and it would have been a real loss for the Spanish side ahead of next season.
As for Munich, they will have to turn their attentions elsewhere as they look to strengthen their side after a below-par start to the Bundesliga campaign.
The ageing squad is now starting to suffer, and they are falling dramatically behind their rivals Borussia Dortmund.
However, Hernandez is one player they may not be getting their hands on.
