Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s start to life as Manchester United’s interim manager got off to the perfect start with an impressive 5-1 victory over Cardiff City.United’s players produced arguably their best performance of the season so far in their first match since Jose Mourinho was sacked.Marcus Rashford put the visitors 1-0 up in the third minute with a fantastic free-kick before Ander Herrera doubled their lead on the half-hour mark.Victor Camarasa pulled a goal back from the penalty spot after Rashford handled inside the box but Anthony Martial restored United’s two-goal lead minutes later, finishing off an excellent team move.United then made it 4-1 early in the second half; Jesse Lingard converting from the penalty spot after being brought down. Speaking earlier in the afternoon, Rooney also claimed United’s decision to sack Mourinho was the right call.

“Something had to change and it was the right decision,” Rooney was quoted as saying by the Daily Mail.

“To be a successful football club, you need everything to be right, to be happy.

“That rubs off on the players. The relationships between some of the staff and the players wasn't great.

“But the players are smiling again. It's a good move for the club, and it'll be fascinating to see how Ole sets the team up and how they play today.”
