Man United fans raved about Victor Lindelof's display under Solskjaer in 5-1 Cardiff win

Manchester United began the post-Jose Mourinho era in refreshing fashion as they produced an purposeful, front-foot performance to win 5-1 at Cardiff City.

Caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer saw his side take the lead inside three minutes thanks to Marcus Rashford's deadly free-kick, with Ander Herrera adding a deflected second.

The Red Devils then produced liquid football in the build-up to Anthony Martial's super 41st-minute goal and Jesse Lingard bagged himself a brace in the second-half.

There was a clear contrast in United's style of play, not only from their attacking players, but from the defenders as well - most notably Victor Lindelof.

In addition to providing many moments of good-quality defending, the ex-Benfica man also had Man Utd supporters raving about the new, attacking intent to his game.

In what ended up being Mourinho's final match in charge of United, Lindelof returned from a lengthly spell on the sidelines during the 3-1 loss to Liverpool at Anfield.

Starting alongside Phil Jones in central defence at the Cardiff City Stadium, the Swede had the confidence to break out the ball-playing skills he's renowned for possessing.

Midway through the first period, Lindelof sprinted all the way into Cardiff's penalty area just to close down goalkeeper Neil Etheridge - yet that was only the beginning.

He came out from the back on several occasions, bursting high up the pitch, leading counter-attacks and showing his class by playing pinpoint through balls to Man Utd's forwards.

How United fans reacted to Lindelof's performance

Whilst heaping praise onto Lindelof, United supporters on Twitter also felt they never would have seen this side to the centre-half had Mourinho remained in charge of the club.

Some also felt that they've now seen the player they thought they were getting when the 24-year-old signed from Benfica for £30 million back in 2017.
