Steven Gerrard’s interview after St Johnstone 1-2 Rangers angers Scottish football fans

Steven Gerrard has made a massive impact since taking the reins at Rangers in the summer.

The Liverpool legend was assigned the unenviable task of making the Scottish giants competitive again after Celtic secured their seventh successive league title.

Nobody thought it was realistic that Gerrard could turn Rangers into genuine title contenders this season, but that’s exactly what’s happened.

The Gers currently sit second in the Scottish Premiership table, just a point behind Celtic, who have a game in hand.

Rangers recorded their 11th victory of the season against mid-table St Johnstone on Sunday afternoon, with the prolific Alfredo Morelos scoring both goals to complete the turnaround after Gerrard’s side conceded the opener.

However, Gerrard was less than impressed with his team’s performance during the opening 45 minutes and made it clear to his players that things needed to improve in the second half.

“The first 45 minutes I wasn’t happy - far from it - poor performance, we were awful,” he told BT Sport. “Didn’t have one player out there who was doing the shirt any justice. I made my feelings very clear at half-time, made some changes to the XI, and to be fair to the players they played with more bravery, more belief, more character and have performed like Rangers players in the second half and turned it around.”

However, he then managed to anger Scottish football fans with his next sentence.

“But we shouldn’t need to work that hard to win at places like this, with all due respect,” he added.

While you can see where he’s coming from - Rangers have won at places like St Johnstone with consummate ease on many occasions in the past - his comment does come across as rather arrogant.

Judging by the replies, he’s gone down in the estimation of many Scottish football fans after his ‘entitled’ comment…

Rangers fans, on the other hand, appear to be happy with Gerrard’s comment and believe he’s just speaking honestly.

In their view, a club of Rangers’ stature should be beating St Johnstone with relative ease and Gerrard is right to expect as much.

Gerrard has also been surprisingly defended by none other than Chris Sutton.

"We want managers to be honest post match so I don’t see your point," the former Celtic striker replied to one of his followers. "Steven Gerrard wasn’t talking St Johnstone down he was just making the point that Rangers should be beating St Johnstone... and they should..."
