Carlo Ancelotti puts quit rumours to bed - Josh McEachran gets his chance

Despite Chelsea losing three of their last four games, and having to deal with a growing injury crisis, Ancelotti’s men are short price favourites to register the win they need to top Group F against Champions League strugglers Zilina.

Ancelotti said: “Alex, I want to protect. We’ve postponed the surgery because the reaction was very good after the weekend.

“He didn’t have a problem after the match against Birmingham but he won’t be involved. Michael Essien is not able to play because he has a swollen toe.

“Bruma will play from the start and also McEachran - Bruma at centre back and McEachran as a holding midfield player.

“It is time for McEachran to play because he has shown a good attitude and personality. It is a good moment for him and time for his chance.”

Meanwhile, Ancelotti also rubbished reports that he was on the verge of resigning from his position in the aftermath of the sacking of his assistant manager Ray Wilkins.

He added: “I don’t know if it is enough to clarify my position to close these rumours and speculation. These rumours are totally untrue.

“I don’t know why they came out. I didn’t speak with the LMA. They called me on Sunday night when I was at home to find out what was happening.

“The rumours are totally untrue. I have a contract at this club until 2012 and I have said a lot of times that I would like to stay here. There is no reason to think about my position. It is very clear – I am the coach.

“I love not just this club, but also the players. I have a lot of confidence in the players and the squad so there is no reason to change my ideas.

“When the team doesn’t get the right results the coach is under pressure. Obviously I would like Chelsea to win every game, but I focussed on my job to make us play better than we are at the moment.”
