Lucas Torreira has become something of a fans' favourite at Arsenal.Arriving on the back of impressive performances at the World Cup, his incredible determination has endeared him to Gooners and many believe he's the player Arsenal have needed for years. His form was certainly impressive when he first joined, too, grabbing his opportunity in the first-team with both hands after Unai Emery was initially cautious with his game-time.The crowning moment came in the north London derby when the Uruguayan scored his first goal for the club in the Gunners' most impressive performance this season. However, recent weeks haven't been so kind to Torreira and although his campaign has been impressive overall, it's only fair that his recent displays are criticised.

Arsenal 4-1 Fulham

Torreira was overrun by the Liverpool midfield at the weekend, missing all five of his attempted tackles during the first-half at Anfield.

For that reason, there weren't too many complaints when Emery placed Torreira on the bench for the New Year's Day clash with Fulham.

Arsenal ran away 4-1 victors with goals from Granit Xhaka, Alexandre Lacazette, Aaron Ramsey and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang neutralising a strike by Aboubakar Kamara.

Reaction to Torreira's display

Torreira was introduced at half-time and the same weaknesses that were present on Merseyside were beginning to show, prompting a number of critical posts across Twitter.

The 22-year-old was also at fault for Fulham's goal, conceding possession in the defensive third and allowing the Cottagers to close in on Bernd Leno.

As a result, there are plenty of Arsenal fans who believe that Torreira needs a rest, in the knowledge that he's an incredible signing but just hasn't performed recently.

It's certainly a fair point and you can check out the pick of the reaction below:

Sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind.

When you're such a high energy player as Torreira, the convoluted winter fixtures can be a killer and it makes sense to only use him when his batteries are fully charged.

The fact of the matter is that Arsenal fans know his quality but are concerned that recent performances are going to undo all the good moments.

Besides, just two days ago, he was garnering praise from Robert Pires who commented: “I think Lucas has changed something in Arsenal’s midfield.

"He’s brought more aggression and spirit which is funny because he’s not tall but he is a warrior.

"He can fight against anyone but he also has good technique, good vision and now he’s scoring so it’s good news for Arsenal."
