David Luiz pulled off a gutsy backheel during Chelsea v Southampton

David Luiz pulled off a ridiculous skill against Southampton

It could well be David Luiz's last season at Chelsea.

The Brazilian defender is a regular under Maurizio Sarri having started all but one of Chelsea's Premier League games this season.

However, his contract runs out in the summer, meaning his future is in doubt.

Willian revealed earlier this week that he wants his compatriot to stay at the club.

"We have to see if the club will want him," Willian said, per Sky Sports. "I think they want (him). For me, I want him to stay.

Luiz divides opinion with Chelsea fans but Sarri continues to pick him; he started once again against Southampton on Wednesday night.

The Brazilian defender is known more for his flair and ability with the ball rather than his defending, but he showed both in a unique moment against Southampton.

Early in the second half, Southampton were attacking down the left and looked as if they would threaten Chelsea's goal.

But, Luiz showed great pace to go across and dispossess Stuart Armstrong.

With the ball looking like it was going out of play, Luiz then pulled off an outrageous back-heel that went through the legs of Shane Long.

Watch the moment below:

Wow. That is just ridiculous defending from Luiz.

If he got that wrong, it could well have been disaster for Chelsea.

But, fortunately for him and Chelsea, he was able to pull it off in style.

Chelsea fans immediately went mad on Twitter after seeing his skill.

Chelsea eventually stumbled to a 0-0 draw against Southampton but Luiz was imperious on the night.

Sarri revealed at the beginning of last month that he would like Luiz, as well as Cesc Fabregas, to extend their stay at the club.

"I spoke with the club about this one month ago. I know very well that it's not easy, but I think we can do a new deal for both," he said, per Sky Sports.

"They are very important players for us. It is very difficult to find a centre-back for this level and it is very difficult to find a centre-midfielder technically like Fabregas, so I think they have to stay with us.

"The deal is very difficult for this reason [both players are over 30 years of age]. The club wants a short contract and the players want a long contract It is difficult for this reason but I think we can find a solution."
