The world was shocked yesterday after the untimely passing of 'Mean' Gene Okerlund was announced.

A famous voice within the world of wrestling, the WWE announced the sad news yesterday afternoon.

Okerlund was just 76 before his death, and it was only less than a year ago when he made his last appearance on WWE television.

And it's true that he really did bring the best out of the superstars when he interviewed them backstage for broadcasts, he just had a style that connected with the audience.

He's perhaps most synonymous for his one-on-ones with Hulk Hogan, with kids around the world being able to recite his 'Well let me tell you something Mean Gene' catchphrase.

Hogan himself paid his respects on Twitter yesterday when he heard the shocking news, stating: 'Mean Gene I love you my brother', before posting a message later on in the evening.

As the wrestling world continued to pay its respects to the voice of an era, there was one man who everyone was waiting for to pay their respects - Vince McMahon.

Vince McMahon has paid his respects to 'Mean' Gene Okerlund, who has passed away aged 76.

And the Chairman of WWE duly dropped a poignant message onto his Twitter account with an emotional mark of respect for Okerlund.

"It was impossible not to crack a smile whenever “Mean” Gene Okerlund entered a room," McMahon tweeted.

"He was the voice behind so many of WWE’s most iconic and entertaining moments, and the WWE family will miss him immensely."

You can bet your bottom dollar that there will be a huge tribute to Okerlund on the upcoming January 7 edition of Raw, and we could even see a live appearance from Hogan to commemorate Mean Gene's life, which would be extremely fitting.

Funnily enough, just after his passing yesterday, a video resurfaced of Okerlund closing out his speech from his WWE Hall of Fame induction in 2006 with a hilarious message that just oozed his charisma.

"If one day I'm called up to the 'big house', they'll have a funeral. I want you to bury me face down - and then all of my critics can kiss me a**."

Rest in peace, Mean Gene.
