Liverpool’s lead at the top of the Premier League has been trimmed to just four points.Jurgen Klopp’s side lost their first league game of the season when they travelled to the Etihad to take on title rivals Manchester City on Thursday night. The champions had the better of the first half and took the lead in the 40th-minute when Sergio Aguero lashed the ball past Alisson. But the match threatened to turn on one substitution.Klopp introduced Fabinho for James Milner in the 57th-minute and, immediately, the visitors started to control proceedings. The Brazilian midfielder sat deep in midfield to allow Liverpool’s full-backs, Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold to get forward. And it led to the equaliser just seven minutes later.Alexander-Arnold’s cross-field ball found Robertson, who squared it for Roberto Firmino to nod home.Suddenly, Liverpool were causing City problems. But Liverpool couldn’t maintain their momentum and Leroy Sane gave City the lead - and the win - just eight minutes later. But there was no doubt that Fabinho’s introduction gave Liverpool a foothold in the game and they looked significantly more dangerous as a result. And Liverpool fans didn’t hesitate in calling for the £43.7 million to start every game from now until the end of the season.

LIVERPOOL FANS WANT FABINHO TO START EVERY WEEK

Check out the reaction on social media to Fabinho’s cameo performance:

Klopp was actually asked after the match whether he should have started Fabinho.

“System-wise there was no real alternative at the beginning,” Klopp answered, per the Liverpool Echo.

"We adapted pretty well when we changed system, because Gini played really well on the left wing.

“But of course Fabinho was good. Hendo was really impressive too.”
