Holders Inter Milan booked their place in the knockout stage of the Champions League with a hard-fought 1-0 win over FC Twente at the San Siro, while Barcelona, Lyon, Manchester United, Valencia, Schalke and Tottenham also sealed qualification.

Esteban Cambiasso scored the only goal of the game at the San Siro after 55 minutes to secure a victory which was deserved but far from simple for the Italian champions, who were without a win in five in all competitions and have slipped to sixth in Serie A.

Valencia joined United in progressing from Group C with a crushing 6-1 win over Bursaspor at the Mestalla, four of their goals coming in the first half.

Juan Mata put them in front with a penalty and Roberto Soldado, Aritz Aduriz and Joaquin made it 4-0 before the break. Soldado added a fifth and, after Pablo Batalla had pulled one back, substitute Alejandro Dominguez a sixth.

Barcelona sealed top spot in Group D with a 3-0 victory away to Panathinaikos. Pedro scored twice for the Catalans either side of a Lionel Messi effort, the Argentinian capping yet another sublime performance with a goal.

Earlier in the evening, Rubin Kazan breathed fresh life into their hopes of reaching the last 16 with a 1-0 home win over FC Copenhagen in Group D.

Captain Cristian Noboa netted from the spot in first-half injury time as third-placed Rubin moved to within a point of their opponents.

Last season's semi-finalists Lyon progressed from Group B despite a 3-0 loss at Schalke, who also went through.

Two goals in the first 20 minutes from Jefferson Farfan and Klaas Jan Huntelaar put the Germans in control and Hunterlaar sealed the win a minute from time.

The win put Schalke a point clear of Lyon at the top of the group, but the Ligue 1 side's progression was also guaranteed as third-placed Benfica lost 3-0 at Hapoel Tel Aviv. Eran Zahavi scored twice, either side of a goal from Douglas da Silva.
