Santiago Solari says Real Madrid shouldn't 'underestimate draws' after Villarreal game

Real Madrid boss Santiago Solari

Real Madrid's short time under the rule of Santiago Solari has been a difficult one to judge.

Los Blancos made the decision to sack Julen Lopetegui back in October after a disastrous 5-1 loss away at bitter rivals Barcelona.

That defeat left the club lingering in ninth-place in the La Liga table and Real do now find themselves five places higher under Solari.

However, performances haven't drastically improved, with Thursday night's 2-2 draw away at struggling Villarreal one of the most underwhelming of a dismal 2018/19.

Karim Benzema was the only high-profile star who could leave the game with his head held high, the Frenchman scoring Real's first goal of the game.

And Solari's comments in his press conference today haven't exactly helped his standing in the eyes of the club's supporters.

The Argentine insisted that Real cannot underestimate draws in La Liga.

"The objective is to keep moving up the positions," he said, per FourFourTwo. "We're aware the start wasn't easy.

"We've moved into fourth place. We have to go out into the fight and take up the challenge of facing difficult situations. It's what we've been doing and we're happy with what we're doing.

Solari in his press conference

"Every team plays in this competition. We have one of the most beautiful leagues. Nobody gives you anything. Everyone has the talent to hurt everyone else.

"It's a very competitive league. We shouldn't undervalue draws. Obviously, we want to win, but the competition is open. We had a good first half at Villarreal and now we'll try to win all three points on Sunday."

It's not a stance you expect from the manager of the Champions League holders and Real fans on Twitter were not very happy with Solari's reaction.

Solari certainly needs to watch what he is saying in his next press conferences.
