Young tennis star Nick Kyrgios called out Australian great Lleyton Hewitt during a Twitter exchange on Friday after Hewitt, his Davis Cup Captain, was not seen at his matches.

The controversial youngster has often been the centre of attention on social media and repeated the feat after accusing the Davis Cup captain of not supporting him.

However, Hewitt was seen front-row of promising Australian star Alex De Minaur's Brisbane International Match which inspired a fan of Kyrgios to enquire if Lleyton Hewitt was still the captain of the team.

It was his reply to this which became the talk of tennis fraternity as Kyrgios stated that his captain "has what some call abandon (ed) us".

The tweet was concluded with shrug and sarcastically used crying emojis.

Within hours, the tweet has been deleted from his account, most likely after some words of advice from an agent or manager. Luckily for everyone else, it had still been posted long enough for people to screenshot it.

Hours after the current tweet debacle with Lleyton Hewitt, American Tennis great John McEnroe called on Kyrgios to "get some perspective".

"The good thing for Nick would be, before it's too late, to get some perspective. For him to realise he's been blessed with some extraordinary talent," said the 7-time Grand Slam champion McEnroe.

This is the not the first time that the player turned commentator has critiqued Kyrgios' behaviour after accusing him of being "hurt because he doesn't train enough" back in August of 2016.

Given some similarities between the two during on-court tantrums, McEnroe has better insight than most into the mind of a frustrated player.

Kyrgios even smashes his rackets like a young John McEnroe.

Australia face Bosnia and Herzegovina next month in a last gasp attempt to reach the Davis Cup final-18. The team will hope they get the right side of Nick Kyrgios for that match.
