Lionel Messi has so much more to his game than just goals.
He can dribble, pass and his ability from set pieces is just phenomenal.
Gary Lineker summed it up when he compared Messi to Cristiano Ronaldo.
“Ronaldo’s the athlete - brilliant in the air, he’s strong, he can smash it, he’s a brilliant finisher, his goalscoring record is unbelievable,” Lineker told JOE.
“But he can’t dribble like Messi, and he can’t pass like Messi, and Messi scores as many if not more goals too.”
The Argentinian has scored 22 goals in all competitions this season but he’s proved his worth to the team with 12 assists.
He’s at the heart of everything that Barcelona do going forwards.
Messi's ridiculous pass v Getafe
It didn’t take Messi long to score in his first match of 2019, firing the Blaugrana ahead in the 20th minute against Getafe.
The 31-year-old reacted quickest to a bouncing ball and slotted it into the back of the net after nutmegging Getafe goalkeeper David Soria.
But it’s what he did in the 23rd minute that really left football fans in awe.
Messi produced a ridiculous reverse pass, taking out four Getafe players in the process, that found Luis Suarez in the box.
Suarez unfortunately missed, denying Messi one of his greatest ever assists.
Football fans were left completely stunned by Messi’s latest moment of magic.
Cherish him while you can, ladies and gents.
Suarez made it 2-0 before half-time with a sublime volley from outside the area.
However, Getafe pulled a goal back in the 43rd minute through Jaime Mata.
Victory for Ernesto Valverde’s side will extend their advantage at the top of the table to five points following Atletico Madrid’s 1-1 draw against Sevilla earlier on Sunday.
With Messi playing at this level, it's hard to see any club preventing Barcelona from winning back-to-back league titles.
