It should come as no surprise to those NFL fans that watched the Philadelphia Eagles eliminate the Chicago Bears from the playoffs yesterday that Cody Parkey feels terrible for his missed game-winning field goal attempt. The Bears kicker hit the left upright with a 43-yard field goal try with five seconds left in Sunday’s game against the Eagles and then watched the ball drop down to hit the crossbar before hitting the turf. The miss meant Chicago was eliminated from the playoffs after losing to Philadelphia 16-15 at Soldier Field. In the Bears' locker room after the game, Parkey expressed his disappointment to Rich Campbell of the Chicago Tribune, saying he felt terrible for the missed kick.He said: “I feel terrible. There’s really no answer to it. I thought I hit a good ball.” Replays would later show that he was right as his kick attempt was actually tipped.Slowed down replays of the field goal try actually show Eagles defensive tackle Treyvon Hester tipping the attempt, causing the ball to go in the direction which it did. Hester made sure he got credit for the tip after the game.

He said to Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Inquirer: "Me and Haloti (Ngata) ... we got penetration, got the hand up like coach always says. Tipped off my fingertips.

"Felt good ... (but) actually, I thought I didn't get enough of it, I thought it was going to go in. When I saw it going in, I turned back around. Then I heard everybody screaming, I was like, 'Oh, (bleep) ... he missed it."

Parkey now joins the likes of past kickers Gary Anderson, Scott Norwood, Blair Walsh, Billy Cundiff, and Doug Brien missed field goals in big spots in playoff games.

Arguably, however, Bears fans should have seen this missed field goal coming, as Cody had missed 10 field goals throughout the season for the franchise, and he had also hit the upright five times.

Parkey had routinely gone to Soldier Field to do extra work in recent months, but this wasn’t enough to help him make the biggest kick of the season. The Bears will now have to decide if he is their kicker moving forward this offseason.

The kick was actually beneficial in more ways than one for Eagles quarterback Nick Foles.

According to NBC Sports, not only did the missed kick book his team in a Divisional Round playoff clash against the New Orleans Saints, but it also earned the quarterback a $1 million bonus.
