Alisson has explained why he decided to join Liverpool over Chelsea

Alisson turned down Chelsea in favour of a move to Liverpool

The goalkeeper position had been a problem for Liverpool for some time.

Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius both took turns in goal last season but, both failed to impress when given their chance.

After Karius' disastrous mistake in the Champions League final last May, Klopp was convinced he needed to buy another goalkeeper.

He eventually went with Alisson Becker, who signed from Roma in a deal worth £66.8 million.

His addition has helped Liverpool to the best defence in the Premier League this season.

However, it could have been very different for the Brazilian goalkeeper.

Alisson was a wanted man at the start of the season, with Chelsea also interested in his services.

Due to Thibaut Courtois' transfer to Real Madrid, the Blues were in the market for a new number one.

They were even favourites to sign Alisson at one point.

However, it was eventually Liverpool who won the race for his signature.

Almost six months on from his transfer to Liverpool, Alisson has finally explained why he chose the Reds over Chelsea.

And he gave three reasons: Chelsea's changing of managers, their lack of Champions League football and Liverpool's history.

Speaking to FourFourTwo, per Liverpool Echo, Alisson said: “I chose Liverpool for the same reasons I went to Roma when I first left Brazil – I thought this would be the best move for my career.

“Chelsea were changing their manager and not playing in the Champions League.

“I’ve also always admired Liverpool’s history. This is a club with five European Cups in their trophy cabinet. I really wanted to be part of that history.

“I came very close to winning the competition with Roma and I’m working hard to make it happen now with Liverpool.

“What’s life if not fighting for your dreams? I dream of winning the Champions League.”

It seems signing for Chelsea was never really an option for Alisson.

Liverpool fans will be relieved he chose them given the impact he has made.

Chelsea won't be too devastated, though.

They eventually signed Kepa, who has been a solid replacement for Courtois.
