When Liverpool spent £75 million on Virgil van Dijk 12 months ago, many football fans questioned their decision. The Dutchman had spent the months prior to Liverpool’s bid sulking at Southampton after he was denied a move to Anfield in the summer. So, was he really worth a world-record fee for a defender?A year later and absolutely nobody is questioning the fee Liverpool paid for Van Dijk. That’s because he’s completely transformed Jurgen Klopp’s defence with a series of world-class performances. In fact, Van Dijk has performed so well since arriving at Liverpool that he’s created an argument that he might just be the best centre-back in world football right now.But it’s not just fans that share that opinion. That’s because a fellow professional - and a fellow centre-back - think that Van Dijk might just be the best in the world.Bayern Munich defender Mats Hummels was conducting a Q&A on Twitter on Saturday afternoon when one follower asked: “Do you think Van Dijk is the best cb in the world right now?Hummels’ answer?“Yes.”

As simple as that.

While Hummels was doing his Q&A, Van Dijk was busy keeping yet another clean sheet as Liverpool beat Brighton 1-0 to go seven points clear at the top of the Premier League.

Hummels will actually go face-to-face with Van Dijk when Bayern Munich and Liverpool clash in the Champions League last-16 stage in February.

However, the German defender has struggled to play regularly this season for the Bundesliga giants with Niklas Sule and Jerome Boateng being preferred to him.

That didn’t stop him from reacting on Twitter after being drawn against his former Borussia Dortmund coach in the Champions League.

Following the draw, Hummels tweeted: “I (eyes emoji) u my former coach.”
