Who is the fastest player in world football right now?In truth, it’s hard to say for certain. A handful of lightning-quick players have recorded similar speeds in recent seasons, and their top speeds during matches obviously fluctuate.According to FIFA 19 - not an ultra-reliable barometer of a player’s speed, admittedly, but fairly accurate nonetheless - the world’s fastest footballer is currently Wolves’ winger Adama Traore, followed by Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe and Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale.Adama and Mbappe in first and second place, respectively, seems pretty realistic. Both players are rapid.Bale is also extremely quick, too, although injuries and his advancing years means the Wales star may have lost a yard of pace over the past couple of years. Third place might be a tad generous in the 29-year-old’s case.In fact, Bale might not even be the quickest player in La Liga right now. That title - judging by what we witnessed at the weekend - could well belong to Athletic Bilbao’s Inaki Williams. The Spanish forward scored both goals in Athletic’s 2-0 victory at San Mames, but it was his second goal in the 84th minute that really caught the eye. Most players would be tiring at that stage of the match, but Williams produced some remarkable acceleration and pace which stunned football fans on social media.Watch the video here...

Spanish football journalist Sid Lowe described Williams as the “fastest man in football” back in September and dedicated his latest Guardian column to the 24-year-old.

In the column, Lowe noted that Spanish TV claimed Williams had run 62.3 metres, reaching a top speed of 38.8km/h - which is rapid.

“The morning’s papers were talking 57 metres and a peak of 34.5km/h – but whatever it was, it was fast,” Lowe added. “It is hard to recall a run like it; impossible, in fact. Add in everything that went with it, the emotion, the significance, the timing, and very few goals have carried you along like this.”
