Manchester United insider gives details of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's meeting with Paul Pogba

Pogba was given a one-on-one morale boost

Manchester United overcame the first real test of the Ole Gunnar Solskjaer era with a 1-0 victory over Tottenham at Wembley.

In the aftermath, it was David de Gea who received most of the plaudits for his outstanding shot-stopping.

The Spanish international made 11 saves in the second half alone, which is more than any other Premier League goalkeeper has made in an entire game all season.

However, the Red Devils also needed a moment of inspiration at the other end of the pitch to ensure they claimed all three points.

With half-time fast approaching, Kieran Trippier gave the ball away to Paul Pogba in the United half.

The midfielder took a touch before pinging it right across the pitch, almost inch-perfect into the feet of Marcus Rashford, who did the rest.

Quite enough has been said about the 25-year-old's relationship with Jose Mourinho, but the extent to which he's looking happier and more creative in recent weeks is inescapable.

Solskjaer has made a point of improving his morale and, according to The Sun, he recently held a one-on-one meeting with him.

The newspaper suggest that the interim manager promised to build the team around Pogba, at least for the next few months, that is, while he has the opportunity.

Solskjaer has faith in Pogba

The Frenchman was also told he is key to United's future and that he's the best midfielder in the Premier League - on his day, Solskjaer might well be right.

As per the same report, a United source said:

Pogba has scored twice under Solskjaer

“Paul has been given so much encouragement from Ole and is working harder.

“The new manager seriously believes Paul is the best midfielder in Premier League.

“He has given Paul the licence to do whatever he likes. The team operates around Paul now.

“He has told them all that if Paul plays well, then the team will do well in every game.”

Though the World Cup winner gets his fair share of criticism, perhaps he's just one of those players who needs an arm around the shoulder every now and again.

That was never really Mourinho's style. Solskjaer's man-management already seems to be paying dividends.
