Liverpool have decided against any major transfers across January.

Having spent big during the summer, the Reds won't be bolstering their squad ahead of an exciting Premier League title race with Manchester City.

The only major activity at Anfield has regarded outgoings with both Nathaniel Clyne and Dominic Solanke making respective moves to Bournemouth alongside a number of a loan updates.

On the whole, though, the fate of Liverpool's season will be decided by their current squad and no concrete transfer developments have suggested otherwise.

It's impossible to completely rule out a deal, but Klopp seemed pretty certain in December by stating: “I would say no but I don't know exactly what will happen until the transfer window closes.

Liverpool's transfer activity

“Could we get somebody just for January with the quality we need? I am not sure that is possible.”

It's a topic that has divided Liverpool fans and especially when you consider City splashed out on Aymeric Laporte midway through their title-winning campaign.

However, fear not Kopites, the spending should return in the summer and especially when you consider players like Divock Origi, Daniel Sturridge and Alberto Moreno are likely to leave.

The Echo use statistic analysis

And in light of the departures of Danny Ings and Solanke, Liverpool are facing an exodus of strikers and will surely need to look for reinforcements at the end of the season.

The odd transfer rumour has been floating about but in the absence of clear candidates, the Liverpool Echo has turned to statistic analysis to assess the strikers Klopp should sign.

Using Wyscout, a professional scouting platform used by many European clubs, the Echo have compared Europe's forwards to the gold standard at Liverpool: Mohamed Salah.

They established that the Egyptian's leading traits are touches in the box per 90 minutes, number of shots per 90, Expected Goals (xG) per 90, and key passes per 90.

So, by testing European strikers against that criteria and ruling out unrealistic signings, they found themselves left with Timo Werner and Luka Jovic.

Werner and Jovic

Werner actually betters Salah when it comes to expected goals and number of shots per 90 minutes and has been linked to Liverpool on numerous occasions.

Meanwhile, Jovic proves something of a wildcard option, emerging as a top contender compared to the Salah criteria and has been delivering goals on a regular basis at Eintracht Frankfurt.

The former seems the more likely purchase for Liverpool, but the younger Jovic could be an investment in the future if they can persuade parent club Benfica into a deal.

Other names that rated highy on the analytics were: Florian Thauvin (Marseille), Andre Silva (Sevilla), Maxwel Cornet (Lyon) and Nicolas Pepe (Lille).

Oh and somebody called Nabil Fekir...

It's certainly an interesting way to compare Europe's strikers and it seems that even the numbers are pointing towards Werner. Start making some phone calls, Jurgen.
