Tom Brady knows what it takes to succeed, but he also knows the heartbreak that can occur after a loss in a big game and he recognises talent when he sees it.

By the end of overtime in the AFC Championship game, the New England Patriots quarterback had defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 37-31 and booked his spot in the Super Bowl for the ninth time in his career.

Brady was outperformed by his counterpart on the Chiefs in Patrick Mahomes, but it was the five-time Super Bowl Champion that came out of the game with the all-important win thanks to a superior running game.

The Patriots quarterback finished completing 30-of-46 passing attempts for 348 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions. The Chiefs quarterback meanwhile finished completing 16-of-31 passing attempts for 295 yards and three touchdowns.

After the game, Brady went out of his way to meet with Mahomes and console the young quarterback who has had an incredible season.

According to Jeff Darlington of ESPN, the New England quarterback quietly approached a security guard waiting outside the Chiefs’ locker room and asked if he could see the Kansas City star.

Brady was then escorted into a room where he spoke briefly with Mahomes. An incredible display of respect from one quarterback to another.

While the season might be over for the Chiefs now, Mahomes can hold his head up high as he's had a fantastic season that could end with him picking up the NFL MVP award in two weeks time.

The Chiefs quarterback finished the regular season with 5,097 passing yards, 50 touchdowns, and only 12 interceptions, while also adding 573 passing yards and three touchdowns in two playoff games.

However, in order to book a spot in the Super Bowl next season, Kansas City knows that they have to support Mahomes by lining up a better defense on the opposite side of the field.

As for Brady, he has now taken the Patriots to the Super Bowl for the ninth time in his career, which is more appearances in the big game than any other team in the NFL.

In two weeks time, they'll face off against the Los Angeles Rams and another young quarterback in Jared Goff in the Super Bowl at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.
