Liverpool legend Phil Thompson is backing Raul Meireles to become an Anfield hero.

The Portugal international joined the Reds from Porto for £11.5 million in the summer and his recent performances suggest he feels at home in the Barclays Premier League.

“He excites me and is proving to be a great signing for Liverpool. The midfielder was outstanding at Spurs and in recent weeks has got better and better," Thommo told the Liverpool Echo.

“Last Sunday was his best performance so far. From his left footed drive which nearly brought a goal to his header off the line, he was sensational and proved what a good player he is."

And the former Anfield star has tipped the 27-year-old to form a formidable midfield pairing with Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard when he returns from injury.

Thompson added: “When Steven Gerrard returns I’m convinced those two are going to form a fantastic partnership in the centre."

Gerrard picked up a hamstring injury on England duty but is expected to return to the fold next week as Liverpool take on Newcastle.

Liverpool head of sports medicine Dr Peter Brukner said: "Steven's going well. He's back running, though not back in training.

“He's certainly looking good to play the Newcastle game, which has been our target all along. We're hoping he'll be back in training at the start of next week. Everything's gone to plan."
