Liverpool fans all name Virgil van Dijk among their top three players this season

Paris Saint-Germain v Liverpool - UEFA Champions League Group C

Jurgen Klopp has worked hard to build a squad that is capable of competing for major trophies following his arrival at Liverpool in October 2015.

Remember, his starting line-up in his first game in charge of the Reds included Divock Origi, Alberto Moreno, Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho.

Now, Liverpool possess the best centre-back in the Premier League as well as a front three that could rival any in Europe.

It’s taken time, but the Anfield outfit really have delivered a lesson in squad building.

The Reds are now primed to end their long wait to win a major trophy. They hold a four point lead at the top of the Premier League and are eyeing a return to the Champions League final after reaching the knockout stage.

Failure to land any silverware this season would be considered a disappointment, which speaks volumes about the club’s current ambitions.

So, which players are most responsible for Liverpool’s success this season?

Liverpool fans asked to name top three players

The Redmen TV attempted to find out by asking their followers on Twitter to name their top three performers in 2018-19.

While some fans struggled to name just three, one name popped up in every response: Virgil van Dijk.

The Netherlands international has been instrumental this season, his performances resulting in Bayern Munich defender Mats Hummels declaring him the best centre-back in the world recently.

Football stats website WhoScored consider Salah, Van Dijk and Sadio Mane to be Liverpool’s best three players so far.

Salah has a rating of 7.74, Van Dijk is 7.37 and Mane is rated at 7.32.

But perhaps in the clearest sign of just how well Liverpool are playing, five other players - Dejan Lovren, Roberto Firmino, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andrew Robertson and Fabinho - all have ratings of seven or higher.

There's no two ways about it - Klopp is getting the best out of these players.
