Rey Mysterio has really been rolling back the years ever since his return to WWE almost exactly a year ago.

The Master of the 619 made a shock appearance at in the Royal Rumble match in 2018 and immediately showed the WWE Universe what they'd missed by flying around the ring like it was 2002.

It left the fans wanting more and that's exactly what they got - a follow-up appearance at the Greatest Royal Rumble in Saudi Arabia the following April happened, and then in October, Mysterio finally made his full-time return to the main roster on SmackDown.

Mysterio found himself in a feud with Randy Orton for the later stages of 2018, but in recent weeks a new-found rivalry has seemingly started with fellow luchador Andrade.

The former NXT Champion seems to have incredible chemistry with Mysterio as first evidenced in a tag team match a few weeks ago, and since then the pair have faced-off in two one-on-one matches.

Match number one saw Andrade come out on top in an absolute spectacle, whilst the sequel was a two-out-of-three-falls match - it was tied at 1-1 until Samoa Joe's interference forced the bout to end in a no contest.

On one hand you have to wonder why WWE are giving away such an incredible matchup away on free television not once, but twice in the space of a week - but there's seemingly a plan in place that not many will have seen coming.

According to Dave Meltzer of the Wresting Observer Newsletter, per NoDQ, the direction WWE seem to be taking the two stars in is by putting them together in a tag team.

There are apparently two reasons for this - to further strengthen SmackDown's already pretty talented tag team division, and for Mysterio to pass the torch to Andrade as the next top luchador in WWE.

It will probably also help the crowd reactions for El Idolo as well - he comes out to pretty mild noise from the fans, but by the end of his matches there is always some kind of response for his in-ring abilities.

Whilst he wasn't a great babyface in NXT, working in tandem with an icon and fan favourite such as Mysterio cannot harm Andrade whatsoever, and this time next year we could be talking about him being one of the favourites for the 2020 Royal Rumble match.
