Gonzalo Higuaín has sealed his loan move to Chelsea and due to his goal-scoring exploits throughout his career, many fans believe he could be the answer to the Blues' problems up top.

However at the age of 31 and showing some signs of decline while at AC Milan, only scoring eight goals in 20 games, there are a sizable chunk of the Chelsea faithful who have their doubts.

Higuaín was presented to the fans at Stamford Bridge during the Carabo Cup semi final second leg against Tottenham and received a warm reception.

Not to mention the fact that Higuaín has proven he can thrive under Maurizio Sarri, with the Argentinian scoring an incredible 36 goals in 35 games during the 2015/16 season under Sarri.

However after such a successful season, the former Real Madrid striker nearly retired from the sport after receiving some terrible news while away on international duty.

During the 2016 Copa America, Higuaín was informed that his mother, Nancy, had been diagnosed with a life-threatening disease.

The Argentina-international spoke to the Mirror about how he almost made a life-changing decision in order to support his mother.

"I decided immediately that I must stop playing football so that I could look after my mum," said Higuain, who could make his debut against Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup on Sunday.

"I suspected something was wrong at home during the Copa America, but it was still a huge shock when I was told the truth.

"I felt guilty, because I played in that final without knowing. My whole world came crashing down in that moment. I was not interested in anything else but my mum. I told her I was finished with football and if it had been down to me I would have stopped playing."

A mothers love for his son can be underestimated and her son's true love was clearly football, Higuaín went on to say that whatever makes him happy filters down to his mother.

"Her reply was that when I played football it made her happy. She told me that she would not allow me to give up something I loved. She asked me to carry on for her and I knew I had to grant that wish."
