The Royal Rumble takes place later today at Chase Field in Phoenix Field, and there's usually a handful of surprising booking decisions at the event.

With the Rumble marking the start of WrestleMania, WWE usually mixes things up at the event in order to start laying down foundations for storylines at The Showcase of the Immortals.

Nine matches, which includes the men's and women's Rumble matches, are taking place at the Royal Rumble this evening, so there's bound to be a couple of surprises as we go through the card.

The consistently reliable WrestleVotes has tweeted out this weekend that a big surprise may be in the plans for the Rumble, and that it should create a genuine reaction.

With that in mind, here are six booking decisions WWE could surprise us with at the Royal Rumble tonight.

Becky Lynch wins men's Royal Rumble

20 of the 30 slots in the men's Royal Rumble have been filled up, leaving 10 places still up for grabs.

While some of the vacant slots will go to NXT superstars and legends that are returning to WWE, one idea being reported is that Becky Lynch is entered into the match.

Dubbed The Man, it makes sense for her to be in the match, but for her to win? That would definitely surprise us.

It would give WWE a way to book the rumoured triple threat main event at WrestleMania if Charlotte Flair was to win the women's Rumble and Ronda Rousey retains her Raw Women's title.

Roman Reigns makes an appearance

WWE fans haven't seen Roman Reigns in the ring since he announced last October that he had leukaemia and that he would be spending some time away from the company to deal with it.

In the past week, however, The Big Dog has been back on WWE's radar, as he has recently been filming a movie alongside The Rock during his time away from in-ring action. This has lead to some interesting speculation.

With many superstars talking about his treatment as well in the past few weeks, Reigns himself could appear himself at the Rumble to thank the fans for their support and provide an update on his recovery.

Kenny Omega makes a WWE return

Ever since he announced that he would be leaving New Japan Pro Wrestling, fans have been thinking about the possibility of Kenny Omega making a return to the WWE.

Omega hasn't been part of the WWE since he was part of one of their development territories, Deep South Wrestling, in 2006, so if he does appear at the Rumble, it would be his main roster debut.

Several ideas have been thrown around for Omega, including either as a surprise entrant for the Rumble match or interfering in the WWE title match between Daniel Bryan and AJ Styles.

WrestleVotes did state that their reported surprise wouldn't be Kenny, but either way, it would be great to see arguably one of the best wrestlers in the world finally in the WWE.

Main roster debuts

Main roster debuts always happen at the Royal Rumble, whether it be superstars from the NXT, or straight from the independent scene. Rousey made her debut in the WWE this way in 2018.

NXT superstars that made their main roster debuts last year were Andrade, Adam Cole, Kari Sane, Ember Moon, and a few could be taking place this year as well in the men's and women's Rumble matches.

Velveteen Dream, Aleister Black, and Ricochet all teased a possible appearance after a curtain call showing at NXT TakeOver last night.

All three superstars could make their main roster debuts in the men's Rumble, plus some women's superstars, like Shayna Baszler, could make an appearance too.

Returning superstars

Returning superstars has been a theme at the Royal Rumble now for several years and that shouldn't change at tonight's event.

Last year, Rey Mysterio and The Hurricane made surprise returns in the men's Royal Rumble, while Lita, Torrie Wilson, Molly Holly, Michelle McCool, Vickie Guerrero, Kelly Kelly, Jacqueline, Beth Phoenix, Nikki Bella, Brie Bella, and Trish Stratus were participants in the women's Rumble.

The Rock could make his first official WWE appearance since WrestleMania 32 to promote his upcoming biopic about superstar Paige's life 'Fighting With My Family'.

As well as The Great One, Batista has been rumoured to make a return to the company as of late, while the likes of Lita and Stratus have been speculated for the women's Rumble once more.

Finn Balor beats Brock Lesnar

WWE surprised many fans by booking Finn Balor in the Universal Championship match against Brock Lesnar a couple of weeks ago, but they could shock fans further in the ring at the Rumble itself.

Fans backing this theory cast their minds back to 2004 when Eddie Guerrero famously defeated The Beast for the WWE Championship at No Way Out with a little help from Goldberg after he interfered in the match.

With Goldberg being replaced by Braun Strowman and Balor obviously replacing Eddie, WWE could book this storyline at tonight's Rumble and leave fans going home happy with The Demon as the new Universal Champion.

It would be so out of the blue that fans would be really excited to see the Universal title on a full-time superstar once more.
