Chelsea fans were certainly excited to see Gonzalo Higuain make his debut for the club against Sheffield Wednesday.

Having spent the season frustrated with Alvaro Morata and Olivier Giroud, the signing of Higuain offered the prospect of a consistent goalscorer playing at Stamford Bridge.

Although supporters won't be able to draw their conclusions until a later date, a game against Championship opposition offered a nice first challenge in English football.

There was no shortage of drama for the Juventus loanee to witness during the first-half, either, as VAR took centre stage in west London.

Sheffield Wednesday were initially awarded a penalty after Joey Pelupessy went done under a challenge from Ethan Ampadu.

That decision was quickly overturned, however, only for Chelsea to go down the other end of the pitch and win a penalty of their own just two minutes later.

There was no questioning this particular incident and Willian duly stepped up, finding the back of the net just as he had done against Tottenham in mid-week.

Willian's gesture to Higuain

However, Chelsea fans were somewhat surprised that Higuain didn't take the spot kick and many wanted Willian to hand over responsibilities.

Yet BBC Sport proceeded to play footage that showed Willian, to his credit, did offer to give Chelsea's new signing the opportunity to step up.

For whatever reason, presumably out of respect for Maurizio Sarri's order, Higuain turned down the offer and Willian proceeded as usual.

It certainly had Chelsea fans talking:

So, it seems supporters have a lot of respect for Willian's actions there.

Although some might suggest that Higuain bottled the opportunity, that seems unlikely when you consider his incredible striking pedigree.

That being said, there wouldn't have been many easier chances to open his account for Chelsea.
