Newcastle caused quite the upset by beating Manchester City on Tuesday night. Pep Guardiola's side went into the match four points behind league leaders Liverpool, while the Toon were floating just one point clear of the relegation zone.City expected to roll their opponents over but instead left St. James' Park with their tales between their legs. It actually looked like it could be a very long night for Newcastle when Sergio Aguero opened the scoring after just 24 seconds. But that wasn't the case. A superb second-half comeback thanks to goals from Salomon Rondon and Matt Ritchie ensured Rafa Benitez's side stunned the defending champions - and the rest of the Premier League. The result has a huge effect on the title race too as it gives Jurgen Klopp's side a chance to go seven points clear at the top if they beat Leicester on Wednesday.

AN IMPORTANT RESULT

Despite Guardiola saying that the race isn't over, it's Liverpool's to lose now.

There's no doubt that Newcastle did them a huge favour by sinking City, but some fans believe that it was actually Klopp, not Benitez, who masterminded the result.

A few hours before kickoff on Tyneside, the Reds boss addressed the media in a pre-match press conference.

He was asked if City playing a majority of their remaining matches before Liverpool will give Guardiola's side an advantage in the title race.

"For me it makes no difference," Klopp responded.

"I expect City to win every game. I would expect them to beat Newcastle but I will still watch the game."

MIND GAMES

It's for these comments that Liverpool fans believe he was behind City's loss, claiming that Klopp put extra pressure on Guardiola's side with some "genius" mind games.

It's hard to argue with that logic. Although really, it's Benitez who should be getting all the credit after securing Newcastle's first league win over Man City since 2005.
