Referee stops Nantes vs Saint Etienne in the ninth-minute to pay tribute to Emiliano Sala

The footballing world has rallied around Nantes after the tragic news surrounding striker Emiliano Sala.

The Argentine striker and pilot David Ibbotson are still missing after their plane veered off course travelling across the Channel Islands to Wales.

Sala was on his way back to Cardiff after saying goodbye to his Nantes teammates.

In response to the horrendous news, Nantes postponed their Ligue 1 game against Saint-Etienne scheduled for that weekend.

After an incredibly tough week, the game went ahead tonight, with tributes coming from both sets of fans before kick-off.

And in the ninth-minute of the game, the referee postponed play to allow those on the pitch, those on the touchline and fans to pay tribute once again to Nantes’ number nine.

A heart-warming tribute to a true footballing tragedy.

The search for Sala and Ibbotson is back underway after many footballers donated for a private search to find the pair – €300,000 was raised.

Today, news broke from the BBC that seat cushions potentially belonging to the plane had washed up on a beach in France.

The BBC write: “An underwater search for footballer Emiliano Sala’s plane will take place after cushions were found on a beach.

“They were discovered near Surtainville on France’s Cotentin Peninsula, on Monday, by French authorities.

“Following this, the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has identified an area of four square nautical miles for a search.”
