Lazar Markovic's Liverpool career summed up by fan's video after move to Fulham

Liverpool fans who went to bed as soon as the transfer window closed at 11pm on Thursday night will have woken up to the news that Lazar Markovic has finally left Anfield.

The Serbian forward has completed a free transfer to Premier League strugglers Fulham, bringing an end to his difficult four-and-a-half year spell with the Merseyside outfit.

Markovic made just 34 appearances for the Reds, scoring three goals, and has been signed by the Cottagers on the recommendation of their centre-forward Aleksandar Mitrović - an international teammate of Markovic’s.

Fulham co-owner Tony Khan told the club’s official website: “Lazar Markovic is a gifted young player; we’re pleased to welcome him from Liverpool for the remainder of the season.

“Lazar is known as a great teammate, he has the support of our manager, and he has the talent to strengthen our attack. Come on Fulham!”

However, you won’t find many - if any - Liverpool fans reacting to the news of Markovic’s departure with disappointment.

In fact, a skim down the replies of Liverpool’s tweet announcing the news shows they’re all delighted to hear the 24-year-old finally been offloaded.

It’s a shame Markovic’s Liverpool career has ended this way. There was such excitement after his £20 million move from Benfica in 2014 - he looked a major talent - but his spell at Anfield has been an unmitigated disaster.

One fan has summed up Markovic’s Liverpool career by posting a video titled ‘Lazar Markovic • 2014-19 • Skills and Highlights | HD’.

Cruelly, it only features one solitary clip: the moment he hit the crossbar with an audacious scissor kick from the edge of the box a few seasons ago.

Imagine if that had gone in. Then you’re talking about a potential Goal of the Season contender. Perhaps it would have marked a turning point in the lad’s career.

By offloading Markovic, Liverpool have cut £35,000 a week from their wage bill - an awful lot of money to pay somebody for doing very little.

Rather than wish him all the best for the future, it appears that most Liverpool fans are just relieved to see the back of him - judging by the reaction on social media, at least.
