The Premier League title race is really hotting up.Ahead of Liverpool’s Monday night clash against West Ham, there are just four points separating the top-three.Jurgen Klopp’s side do have a game in hand and the chance to go back five points clear but Spurs and Man City have certainly put pressure on them with wins at the weekend. It may only be the start of February but it seems the mind games are well underway.City’s loss to Newcastle on Tuesday looked fatal until Liverpool could then only draw 24 hours later to miss out on the opportunity to go seven points clear.Of course, we all know how Kyle Walker reacted with his “So basically they thought they were gonna go 7 points ahead…” tweet. Now, after Pep Guardiola’s side beat Arsenal 3-1 to go to within two points of Liverpool, it was Raheem Sterling’s time to play mind games. He included the words “now lets wait….” accompanied by the ‘eyes emoji’ clearly talking about Liverpool’s game in hand against West Ham.
While it certainly wasn’t quite as controversial as Walker’s tweet last week, it did get the attention of Liverpool fans.
Sterling - who isn’t particularly liked at Anfield after he left the club unceremoniously for City in 2015 - was reminded that whatever happens on Monday night while he’s ‘waiting’ Liverpool will still be ahead of City.
Whatever Liverpool fans say, though, there’s no doubt Man City have been given renewed hope in the title race.
Guardiola himself admitted that he thought that the chances of his side winning consecutive titles were “almost over.”
"After Newcastle, [it was like] we had already lost the Premier League,” he admitted. “Everybody said it would be seven points and today we are two [behind].
“After the Newcastle game everybody was convinced, myself too, that Liverpool were going to beat Leicester and it would be seven points and it would be almost over. Now we are on two points and that’s why we don’t have to look too much at the table.”
We have to be ourselves. We didn’t recognise ourselves at Newcastle but today we came back.”
