After back-to-back draws against Leicester City and West Ham, many thought Liverpool’s title challenge was on the ropes.

Manchester City quickly pounced on Jurgen Klopp’s side’s misfortunes, regaining their place at the top of the Premier League table.

However, Saturday’s 3-0 win over Bournemouth has shown that this Liverpool side under the German’s guise is one that won’t go down without a fight.

Goals from Sadio Mane, Gini Wijnaldum and, of course, Mohamed Salah secured a vital three points for the hosts. Not to mention Naby Keita - who’s struggled to adjust to life in the Premier League - putting in arguably his best shift since signing for the club in the summer.

Prior to the fixture, attention had been drawn to Liverpool’s historic lack of composure when it comes to carrying their league-topping form into the tail end of a season.

The 2013/14 season is certainly fresh in the minds of fans.

Klopp has ignored these criticisms. But he has insisted that he and his players are wary they needed to bounce back.

Despite a number of positives to take from Liverpool’s remarkable season so far, Klopp has named one thing in particular as the reason behind their success.

“The character and the mentality of these boys is the only reason we are where we are,” he said.

“We are very self-critical. It was clear we were not happy with the two performances (against Leicester and West Ham). There are reasons but we cannot speak about it in public because it always sounds like excuses.

“But in analysing it we have to speak about the right things. You can win or draw for different reasons but you don’t want to just come through a game somehow.

“We want to play convincing football, we want to perform and that was the reaction we wanted to show.”

Emphatic words from an emphatic manager.

Although, Liverpool’s latest stint at the top of the table could very well be a brief one.

Manchester City welcome Chelsea on Sunday and Pep Guardiola’s men have the chance to go top if they win by a sizeable margin.

However, Liverpool’s game-in-hand over the Cityzens could prove crucial in the grand scheme of the title race.
