Liverpool have been warned by Ipswich Town boss Roy Keane over a potential move for England starlet Connor Wickham.
The 17-year-old striker, dubbed 'the new Wayne Rooney' by some sections of the media, has been linked with a host of Premier League clubs after impressing in the Championship, with Liverpool and Arsenal thought to be favourites in the race to sign the player.
Reds boss Roy Hodgson has been linked with a £10 million move in recent weeks ahead of the re-opening of the transfer window, but former Manchester United legend Roy Keane has moved to suggest that the player wouldn't be allowed to leave the club on the cheap.
"There aren't many Connor Wickhams around," said Keane.
"I have a certain figure in my head that we'd have to consider. I think Connor and his agent would have that as well. You've got to be careful not to get blasé about Connor and say 'we'll take £7m or £8m for him'."
An England U17 international who is already on the fringes of the U21 side after making his debut at that level in the summer, Wickham has a had a difficult campaign this year after suffering a string of niggling injuries.
Spurs have also been linked with the player alongside Liverpool and the Gunners, but surprisingly Manchester United have never been mentioned in the same vain.
"The big teams wouldn't be buying him for what he's doing now. They're going to buy him for what he can do in four or five years' time," the former Old Trafford enforcer continued.
"Whether that's Tottenham Hotspur or Liverpool or whoever, but Manchester United had to buy Wayne Rooney for £28m when he was 18. Can Connor be as good as him? I think he has the potential."
The teenage starlet appears destined for great things, and is certainly on the wish list of a string of clubs in January.
Liverpool are searching for an attacking foil for Fernando Torres at Anfield, although Wickham's purchase would be with a view to the future on Merseyside.
New owners NESV have pledged a transfer war chest in the region of £35 million and want to see young, attacking talent purchased. Wickham would almost certainly fit the bill for Liverpool.
