Newcastle United fans were left raging with referee Graham Scott after conceding a late equaliser away at Wolves on Monday night. The Magpies were on course to secure three precious points thanks to Isaac Hayden’s 56th-minute strike. However, Willy Boly’s equaliser with 94 minutes and 34 seconds on the clock was a bitter pill for everybody associated with Newcastle to swallow.Newcastle fans were fuming for two separate reasons. The first was Boly’s challenge on Martin Dubravka for his equalising goal. The French defender had his hands on the Newcastle goalkeeper’s shoulders as he was coming down from leaping and many supporters were convinced a foul should have been awarded. Not everybody agreed, though. Jamie Carragher and Patrick Kluivert both argued it wasn’t a foul on Dubravka, while Newcastle legend Alan Shearer tweeted: “Goalkeeper should be stronger”.

But Newcastle supporters - including Shearer - were also angry that the full-time whistle wasn’t blown before Boly was able to equalise.

Four minutes of stoppage time was flashed up by fourth official Simon Hooper - but Boly’s goal came 34 seconds over the amount of time that was initially added on.

However, it’s important to note that four minutes of added time means a minimum of four minutes added time. Not four minutes regardless of what happens in injury time.

Rafa Benitez made a substitution in the 90th minute - sending Ayoze Perez on in place of Javi Manquillo, presumably to waste some time - and footage has emerged which shows ref Scott clearly mouthing “four minutes” after the substitution had been completed.

This ensured another 40 seconds at least - and possibly up to a full minute - on top of the initial four minutes, meaning Boly’s equalising goal came in time that had already been added on by the match officials.

Of course, there will still be many people who believe the goal should have been disallowed for a foul.

But those angry with the amount of time added on - Shearer included - can have few complaints given the injury-time substitution that Benitez made.

However, consistency is clearly a problem with regards to this particular issue.

While some referees like Scott will correctly add more time on at the end of injury time in the event of a substitution or goal, others (sometimes) do not.

For example, Jon Moss blew the full-time whistle on 94:55 during a recent Premier League fixture between Manchester United and Burnley, despite the fact five minutes were added on and Victor Lindelof also scored during that time.
