Maurizio Sarri has 'barely spoken' to Gary Cahill amid the club's recent problems

Gary Cahill has found playing time difficult under Maurizio Sarri

Gary Cahill has struggled for game time under Maurizio Sarri.

After joining in 2011, the England international has been an integral figure at the back for Chelsea.

However, Sarri doesn't seem to have the same confidence in him as his predecessors.

Cahill has played just seven times this season, including just 21 minutes in the Premier League.

The 33-year-old has even failed to make the bench on numerous occasions this season, with Sarri even saying back in December that it is 'not possible' to include him in the Premier League.

"I respect him very much because he has won everything with this club, but then I have to do my job," Sarri said of Cahill, per ESPN.

"Every match I have to choose. For me it is not [possible] to have him on the bench.

"Maybe he is the best [of our defenders] in the box, but our defenders may play 100 or 110 balls in a match so I need defenders [to play] very technically."

Despite Cahill's playing time being restricted, Sarri has kept him as club captain.

However, despite that act, Sarri's treatment of Cahill behind the scenes has been poor.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Sarri has made 'no effort' to use Cahill's influence and has 'barely spoken' to him about where the team is going wrong.

"Cahill is one of the few genuine leaders left at Chelsea, but his influence has been minimised by the fact he has rarely been included in Sarri’s match day squad or used within the dressing-room," their report reads.

"Sarri has made no effort to use Cahill’s experience despite keeping him as club captain.

"The 60-year-old has barely spoken to the former Bolton Wanderers man and has not consulted him on what might be going wrong."

That is poor from Sarri. Cahill has been a tremendous servant to Chelsea, having played 289 times for the club.

He has also helped Chelsea to six major trophies, including two Premier League's and one Champions League.

But, Sarri appears to simply not care for him.

Chelsea's defence is currently under scrutiny, having conceded four to Bournemouth two weeks ago and six to Manchester City on Sunday.

Maybe it's about time Sarri started using Cahill's experience and reinstall him to the starting lineup.
