Kylian Mbappe’s electrifying burst of pace for PSG v Manchester United

Paris Saint-Germain may have been without Neymar and Edinson Cavani but they still had too much quality for Manchester United to handle in their Champions League last-16 first leg tie at Old Trafford.

After a drab first half, in which both sides created very little, Presnel Kimpembe opened the scoring in the 53rd minute with a close-range volley from an Angel Di Maria corner.

Di Maria, whose every touched was booed by the United fans following the manner of his departure from Old Trafford in 2015, then set up Kylian Mbappe seven minutes later.

United are now left with a mountain to climb ahead of the second leg in Paris on March 6.

After conceding two away goals on Tuesday night, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side will need to produce their best performance of the season to qualify for the quarter-finals.

Because of United’s excellent recent form, and because PSG were without two of their key players, the hosts went into the first leg as favourites.

But PSG have some fabulous players in their ranks, and none more so than the mercurial Mbappe.

The Frenchman, who only turned 20 in December, terrorised the United back-line with his speed.

And his explosive burst of pace for his goal was nothing short of frightening.

Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof both had a significant head-start on the World Cup winner as they sprinted back towards goal, but Mbappe outpaced both of them to tap home Di Maria’s cross.
