Thibaut Courtois hasn't exactly enjoyed the perfect start to life at Real Madrid.Having turned his back on Chelsea this summer, Courtois was widely criticised for joining the bitter rivals of his former employers Atletico Madrid. Not only that, but a number of disappointing performances left supporters calling for Keylor Navas to maintain the number one jersey.Nevertheless, Santiago Solari has persisted with the club's biggest signing of the summer and it certainly seemed a wise decision during their clash with Ajax.Having won the last three Champions League titles, Los Blancos would have fancied their chances of qualifying for the quarter-finals against Dutch opposition.

Ajax vs Real Madrid

That being said, they were second best to the hosts at the Amsterdam Arena during the first-half and Courtois was needed to make a series of important saves.

Dusan Tadic even struck the post as Ajax ramped up the pressure and it looked as if they'd finally taken the lead just before half-time, thanks to a terrible error from Courtois.

For all his important saves, the Belgian goalkeeper inexplicably fumbled a tame header from Matthijs de Ligt and allowed Nicolas Tagliafico to score into an open net.

VAR comes to Courtois' rescue

However, just a few moments later and the goal was disallowed, when VAR controversially indicated that Tadic was offside by way of standing behind Courtois.

It was certainly a contentious decision but a moment of Champions League history; the first goal to be disallowed by VAR. Check out the full incident down below:

You're welcome, Thibaut.

If he had produced that error during the group stages, there would have been no technology to save him and his mistake would be remembered as one of the worst of the season.

What makes the situation even more amusing is that Courtois had heavily praised VAR during the pre-match press conference. You couldn't write it.

He remarked to the media: "I like it. I think we saw in the World Cup it was a good experience with all countries in favour of VAR and it worked well."
