The return of Cain Velasquez not only has fans excited but has also brought an interesting twist to the heavyweight division.

It's common knowledge that current pound-for-pound king Daniel Cormier isn't ever going to fight his AKA teammate, while light heavyweight champion Jon Jones can also be thrown into the mix with DC only willing to fight his bitter rival in the heavyweight division.

FANTASY

Then there's Stipe Miocic and his campaign for a title rematch.

Bones, on the other hand, doesn't seem too fond of the idea of giving Cormier the advantage in a weight class where he's a lot more comfortable.

Velasquez makes his highly anticipated return to the Octagon on Sunday in Phoenix, taking on the dangerous and heavy-handed Francis Ngannou with the winner all but cementing their name in the championship picture.

Recently, Cardio Cain was asked by TMZ about how he thinks he would fare in a battle opposite Jones, should the latter ever make the rumoured move to the heavyweight division.

While remaining respectful and commending Jones on the athlete he is, the former heavyweight champion claimed that he could beat him if he ever received the opportunity.

He said: "I think I could [beat him].

"I think I'm good enough. Jon Jones, he's an amazing athlete. I've watched him in all his fights. I know what he's capable of.

"Again, every guy opposes a great challenge. I think he does as well."

INEVITABLE

Plenty of names have tried and failed to become the first to truly hand Jones the first actual defeat of his career, and Jones sent a warning of his own to Velasquez after the comments made their way to Jones.

He responded by stating that his heavyweight days are inevitable.

Responding on his Instagram account, Jones said: "Your confidence is going to have to be on lock in order to beat me, my guy.

"Can't be talking about 'I think I can.' I feed off picograms of self-doubt, and I can smell it from miles away.

"For now, let's just focus on the fights ahead of us. My heavyweight days are inevitable."

Velasquez can take the pressure off himself first when he takes on The Predator, but the attention will then quickly turn to Jones who defends his crown against Anthony Smith in the main event of UFC 235 next month.

Despite the results, the fantasy match-up is still going to draw plenty of interest.
