Newport County’s incredible FA Cup run is over. The Welsh side had already beaten Leicester City and Middlesborough to set up a fifth-round tie against Premier League champions Manchester City. And what a special occasion it was at Rodney Parade. The League Two side may have fearing the worst considering the way City have dispatched some lower league sides clubs this season. But, rather astonishingly, it was 0-0 at half-time with Ederson having to make a fantastic save from Tyreeq Bakinson to keep it that way.City’s class eventually told in the second-half with Leroy Sane and Phil Foden putting them 2-0 ahead. However, Newport looked to set up a grandstand finish when Padraig Amond lobbed the ball over Ederson with just minutes remaining. However, hope of a dramatic equaliser were dashed just seconds later when Foden made it 3-1.Riyad Mahrez scored in injury-time to complete the scoring. It was harsh on Newport who had produced an outstanding performance. At full-time, Guardiola made his way onto the pitch to pay his respects to the Newport players. And after embracing Newport’s goalscoring Amond, he congratulated him on scoring against his side.

Cameras spotting Guardiola speaking to the Irishman and he was asked about what was said - while he also revealed that City invited them into the dressing room after the game.

“They were very respectful of us which was brilliant, they even invited us into the dressing room after the game," Amond said.

“There were some lovely words from their players and manager. Just after the game, Pep came over and congratulated me. He said we could be very proud of ourselves and proud that I scored, and we were a really good bunch of lads.

“If someone like that says you can be proud of yourself it means a lot more.

“Also the fact that I’ve scored against the best team in Europe.

“It’s a great feeling. I wanted to go and slide on my knees in the corner, but we needed to get going again quickly and get back in the game.”

Classy from Pep.

The Spaniard will now be looking to get his side prepared for their visit to Germany to face Schalke in the Champions League on Wednesday.

They then have the Carabao Cup final to think about on Sunday against Chelsea.

As for Amond and Newport, they will be seeking to improve on their 15th-placed position in League Two.
