Barcelona's modern history has been typified by their stellar promotion of players from the famous La Masia academy.

Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta, Xavi Hernandez, Sergio Busquets and Gerard Pique have all made the journey from graduate to global superstar in recent years.

However, talent from La Masia has dried up, with Sergi Roberto the last player to really force his way into the first-team.

Carles Alena has made huge strides in 2018/19, but he's still yet to become anything near a regular under Ernesto Valverde.

Barca have become more synonymous with spending big-money in the transfer market rather than promoting youth.

Ousmane Dembele, Philippe Coutinho, Arthur Melo, Malcom, Samuel Umtiti and Clement Lenglet are just some of the big purchases made by the Blaugrana since 2016.

So what's the plan with La Masia, is it set to continue its decline? Well, it may be on the up again very soon.

In Valverde's recent contract renewal talks, both the manager and the club's board agreed on placing more emphasis back on La Masia.

And according to Catalan publication Sport, Valverde provided five names to the Barca hierarchy that he intends to hand senior minutes to in the near future.

All five have recently signed new long-term deals at the Camp Nou.

RIQUI PUIG

The gemstone of Barca's B team, Puig starred in the club's pre-season tour and has been in immense form in Spain's second division - the natural heir to Iniesta.

ORIOL BUSQUETS

Despite the fact they are unrelated, Oriol is the man viewed by the club as the man to succeed Sergio. Like Puig, he's been in sparkling form for the B team.

JUAN MIRANDA

With Barca lacking a natural replacement to Jordi Alba at left-back, Miranda looks perfect to fill the void. He's already made his senior debut and looks set to be given more chances by Valverde.

ABEL RUIZ

The youth option in attack, Ruiz has recently made his return to the B team after a long-term injury. Given Barca's packed fixture list, Valverde may give him a chance when he rotates his squad.

MOUSSA WAGUE

The Senegalese full-back has impressed since his move from Eupen, with his lightning-quick pace catching the eye. Roberto and Nelson Semedo may have some stiff competition for the right-back spot.
