Jose Mourinho pays tribute to Arsene Wenger after he wins Laureus Lifetime Achievement award

Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger once had the fiercest of managerial rivalries in the Premier League.

Insults were exchanged in the media on a number of occasions, with Mourinho most famously calling the former Arsenal boss 'a specialist in failure'.

Things even got physical on the touchline in 2014, when Wenger shoved his opposite number after a disagreement over a strong challenge made by Gary Cahill on Alexis Sanchez.

The pair rarely saw eye-to-eye when their respective teams clashed but now that both are currently out of management, Monday night gave them a chance to finally bury the hatchet.

At the 2019 Laureus World Sports Awards, Wenger was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at a glamorous ceremony in Monaco.

The Frenchman followed the likes of Pele, Johan Cruyff and Bobby Charlton in receiving the prize and was recognised for his success with Arsenal during his 22-year tenure in north London.

The recognition Wenger has received comes as no shock and is much deserved for his services to the Gunners and football as a whole.

But what was surprising last night, is that Mourinho recorded a special message for him to accompany the award.

"I really enjoyed the competition. But the real respect was always there. He made lots of history in that football club. The nickname is there - the 'Invincibles' - Amazing.

"A coaching philosophy, the almost perfect team. He is one of the best football managers in the history of football."

It's good to see that now their intense Premier League rivalry is over, Mourinho has held out an olive branch to his colleague.

Calling Wenger 'one of the best managers in the history of football' is certainly the biggest of compliments and it shows that there is a humble side to Mourinho, one that we don't often see.
