Liverpool fans drowned out the Champions League anthem before Bayern Munich match

Liverpool v FC Bayern Muenchen - UEFA Champions League Round of 16: First Leg

Big European nights at Anfield are always special occasions - and the Liverpool fans were in typically fine voice ahead of this evening’s Champions League last-16 first leg against Bayern Munich.

With several players ruled out - including their talismanic centre-back Virgil van Dijk - the Reds needed their passionate supporters to act as the 12th man against one of the most formidable teams left in the competition.

And ahead of kick-off, it’s fair to say they did not disappoint.

‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ is always sung loudest on these huge nights, but the atmosphere moments before Tuesday evening’s game was remarkable.

The fans were so loud that they even managed to drown out the Champions League anthem, which is obviously no mean feat. (Scroll down to watch the footage).

As the cameras panned down the line of players, ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ was so much louder than the famous Champions League anthem.

Here’s BT Sport’s footage…

And here’s a video taken from the press box by the Evening Standard’s Vaishali Bhardwaj…

Wonderful support from the Liverpool fans.

Every Liverpool player should have started the match feeling 10-feet tall after hearing that.
