Manchester United's summer transfer window in 2018 will certainly not be remembered fondly.

The lack of investment in the defence from Ed Woodward sparked a breakdown in trust between the board and Jose Mourinho.

It ultimately proved to be a key factor in the Portuguese's demise as he was sacked following a 3-1 defeat away at Liverpool in December.

The only marquee signing made in the summer was that of Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk, with the Brazilian arriving for a fee of around £52m.

Billed as the latest South American star to emerge from Ukraine, the 25-year-old ignored the advances of Manchester City and opted for Old Trafford.

However, his time so far has been nothing short of disastrous. Fred quickly fell out of favour under Mourinho after a string of poor performances, but things have got worse under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Fred has now not made an appearance for United in 50 days, amassing a measly 566 minutes of action in the Premier League so far.

Taking his transfer fee into account, that's around £91,872-per-minute played.

So why is he not playing? Well, as is obvious right now, United's midfield three of Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic and Ander Herrera is thriving under Solskjaer.

However, even when that trio is rotated, both Andreas Pereira and Scott McTominay are ahead of Fred.

It begs the question; have United already given up on the Brazilian? Well, according to Manchester Evening News, that is certainly not the case.

A source from United has told the paper that Fred has received a lot of positive feedback about his performances in training.

The club simply believe that he requires more time to adapt to a new environment before being given more game time.

Solskjaer has previously likened Fred's current situation to that of Juan Sebastian Veron, although the Argentine did not exactly thrive after his move from Lazio.

Fred will be hoping he can have more of an impact in the coming months and years of his United career.
