Cristiano Ronaldo’s hopes of winning a fourth consecutive Champions League are hanging by a thread.

After helping Real Madrid to three European Cups in the past three years, he was hoping to do the same with Juventus this time around.

But after the Old Lady lost 2-0 to Atletico Madrid in the first-leg of their last-16 clash, Juve now need a minor miracle to reach the quarter-finals.

And it wasn’t an enjoyable return to Madrid for Ronaldo.

He was booed throughout and was fairly anonymous during the 90 minutes.

But as always, he still made headlines.

Ronaldo’s ‘5’ gesture during the match was spotted by football fans.

A gesture he repeated walking through the mixed zone after the match as he muttered: “I have five Champions League, Atleti have zero.”

It was true but it made the Portuguese look like a sore loser.

But it’s that kind of attitude that has seen Ronaldo become one of the greatest players ever, winning five Ballon d’Ors.

And after picking up the accolade in 2014, Ronaldo admitted that he doesn’t react well to losing - something he simply can’t help.

"One day I told some people that they were jealous of me because I was young, handsome and rich - that was a mistake," he said. "It was after a game when I was very angry because I hadn’t scored.

"I am very competitive and I hate losing. There is no doubt that I have expressed myself badly by saying certain things after losing a match.

"I always want to be the best, both with my club and the national team. That is why there are sometimes misunderstandings. With age, you learn from your mistakes.

"I am not perfect. I am human and made of flesh and bones like everyone else. I laugh, I cry and I have my problems but people don’t always understand me.

"The way I am has evolved, even if my personality has not changed much. I always want to improve and I put pressure on myself in that respect. It was like that at Manchester United and it is also like that in Madrid."

And that’s that’s exactly what happened on Wednesday night.

Ronaldo hadn’t played well and his form of just one Champions League goal in six appearances this season is poor by his standards.

With Champions League elimination staring him in the face, he couldn’t help but snap at Atleti fans - who had verbally abused him all match - and the press after the game.

But it’s this kind of desire to win and be the best that has seen him do just that.
