Arsenal have emerged as the front runners to sign AS Roma’s sporting director superstar, Monchi.

The man many claim to be one of the best sporting directors in all of football is set to leave the Italian capital at the end of June when his contract expires to reunite with former boss Unai Emery at Arsenal, according to the Daily Mail.

The report claims that Monchi has always wanted to work in England with a Premier League team and that the Spaniard is now Arsenal’s number one target for the role of technical director after interest in Ajax’s Marc Overmars has cooled.

Monchi is known across the continent for his ability to spot talent at a fair price, being able to by a player for cheap and sell them on at a profit later on down the years.

During his 16 years as sporting director of Sevilla, Monchi made over €300 million in profit for the club in player sales selling the likes of Sergio Ramos, Dani Alves and Ivan Rakitic - three players he also discovered with his vast network of scouts.

A club under construction

After the dismissal of chief scout and head of recruitment Sven Mislintat at the start of February, Arsenal are currently a club undergoing a period of change in all areas and particularly in player recruitment.

Arsenal’s signings in the Emery era have been a mixed bag for fans of the north London club. Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi have been sensations, whereas Stephan Lichtsteiner has only worsened things for an already broken defence.

The potential appointment of Monchi will see the 50-year-old former goalkeeper reunite with his most successful partner in Emery. The duo enjoyed massive success together in Spain with Sevilla as the Andalusian club won three Europa League titles in a row from 2012 to 2015.
