Old Trafford has already been the scene of some huge moments in Trent Alexander-Arnold's short career so far.

The England international made his first Premier League start in a 1-1 draw away to Manchester United in January 2017.

However, last season's outing at the Theatre of Dreams produced no such happy memories as Liverpool slumped to a 2-1 defeat.

Jose Mourinho made it known that the young full-back had been targeted defensively as he endured a torrid afternoon against Marcus Rashford.

Alexander-Arnold will be looking to put the ghost of that game to bed on Sunday, of course, when Jurgen Klopp's men have the chance to go three points clear at the top of the table.

In terms of the two clubs' respective fortunes, the tables have turned quite dramatically this season, yet the prospect of Rashford and Alexander-Arnold going toe-to-toe again remains a tantalising one.

Looking back at their last encounter, the 20-year-old has admitted it was one of the lowest points of his time in the Liverpool first team so far.

"I needed to use it as motivation to make sure something like that doesn’t happen again and to prove that you are better than you showed on that day," he said, per The Guardian.

Mourinho's tactics were vindicated on that occasion but rather than be disheartened, Alexander-Arnold sought the advice of the Reds' academy director Alex Inglethorpe.

Back to basics

He recalled returning to Kirkby to analyse his display:

"It was about getting back to basics, not to overthink things and think you are not good enough at that level, that maybe the level is too good for where you are at. It is important to put it behind you.

"Alex helped me with that, the manager as well and also the people around me who support me. They guided me through the tough time around that game.

"I would probably say it was the hardest point of my career up to then. Obviously the Champions League final came afterwards which was tougher than that, but it is something that has helped me learn, progress and move forward.”

There is no doubt that he has indeed moved forward, the club having handed him a five-year contract last month as reward for his efforts.

Another tough test beckons, though, with Rashford bang in form and having scored six goals since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took the reins back in December.

Liverpool's defence will have to be at their best.
